While I would always want my child to pick a book from the book club order form, I know he will because I instilled a love of reading in him from a very young age. What about those children that will only be interested in these non-book items because no one did that for them? Appealing to them gets them interested and hopefully, they will pick up a book after they&amp;#39;ve been drawn in by something else. Additionally, you are the parent. If you do not want your child to have a certain item then simply do not purchase that item.  There are still many books and healthy choices on the scholastic pages to choose from. They often offer bargains on some good books, and I believe these book clubs allow kids to own books who might not otherwise have the opportunity. But Joe's absolutely right about some of the dreck that's part of the package. I have two young daughters who regularly bring these order forms home. Anything less than full funding encourages principals to be resourceful, and that leads to commercialism in school.
